This amazing gothic monument, or what's left of it, was founded by Nuno Álvares Pereira, the commander that became a member of the Carmelite Order. Its construction was finished in 1423 and was at that time the biggest church in Lisbon.
The ruins of the Carmo Church, left by the devastating earthquake in 1755, are best seen from the Baixa (downtown) especially from Rossio, from Graça or from St. George Castle.Today open-air summer orchestral concerts are held beneath its majestic archways. Its sacristy houses the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo (Archaeological Museum), a small but worthy collection of ceramic tiles, medieval tombs, ancient coins, and other city finds.

 | Oh, my, it is so beautiful. I miss Gothic. Fortunately I will see a lot of it soon enough!
I would love going to Portugal. That is on top of my list. |
 | I remember an adventurous dinner at a Indian restaurant nearby. Wonderful memories that'll stay forever :D |
 | Oh it is Beautifull! Sara, I need to keep this in mind when we travel to Europe to see my family! Thanks honey for posting! Beijos! |
 | eppp wrote on Oct 27, '05 Wonderful pics, madame photographeuse. I have read about the development of kind of this kind of architecture. It was considered sacred secret architecture, I believe, once upon a time. Freemasons or something? And one end facing the East where the sun rises? It has been too long and I forget. Maybe I am mistaken. In any case I am loving the arches, the history and your photography. |
 | It's funny you should mention that, I visited it with a friend who was currently reading one of Dan Brown's books, so we did link some things there with masonry. Although I'm not that well versed in history or architecture to state as such.
I'll have to find out more, won't I? Oh, you're making me work hard, madame inquirer :) |

Pequenina, amorosa e desconhecida. Assim, no meio da cidade :) |

Moro no Rossio... Estou envergonhada...:(
