"Ala Dos Namorados is one of the most innovative groups of Portuguese music. Its repertoire includes different styles, ranging from rhythms from Cape Verde and reminiscences of medieval singers to music-hall with taste and jazz, although its music is born from the melancholy of fado and from the urban traditional Portuguese folk songs, a mixture of troubadour songs, and contemporary music.
One of the most striking aspects of the band is the unbelievable melancholic voice of singer Nuno Guerreiro, who many would mistake for a feminine voice. It goes beyond the sounds of a tenor into the range of a contralto." in www.worldmusiccentral.org
I've left a few samples of some of my faves, pls enjoy.
"Perdidamente", in the above video has the most amazing lyrics, a poem by Florbela Espanca, a Portuguese poet born in the 19th century who still today is seen as one of the best female poets in Portugal.
Ser poeta é ser mais alto, é ser maior To be a poet is to be higher, is to be bigger Do que os homens! Morder como quem beija! Than men! To bite as if kissing! É ser mendigo e dar como quem seja It is to be beggar and to give as one who is Rei do Reino de Aquém e de Além Dor! King of the Kingdom of Here and Beyond Pain!
É ter de mil desejos o esplendor It is to have of a thousand desires the splendor E não saber sequer que se deseja! And not to know what one desires! É ter cá dentro um astro que flameja, Is to have inside a star that flames, É ter garras e asas de condor! It is to have claws and wings of condor!
É ter fome, é ter sede de Infinito! It is to feel hunger, and thirst of of the Infinite! Por elmo, as manhãs de oiro e de cetim... Roaming, the mornings of gold and satin… É condensar o mundo num só grito! It is to condense the world in one single shout!
E é amar-te, assim, perdidamente... It is to love you, thus, madly… É seres alma, e sangue, e vida em mim It's you being soul, and blood, and life in me E dizê-lo cantando a toda a gente! And saying singing it to everyone!
I can't seem to be able to access the playlist, but I can see-hear the videos...
The words of the poet are, like, wow, and it is interesting to hear them put to music. The second video makes me dance. :-)
I love the second song as well, it's so lively and fun! The words are also very fun, about a couple who's in love and meets furtively behind the nosey neighbours' backs. It has a very childlike feeling to it, cheeky children trying not to get caught kind of thing ;)
